Horses are hindgut fermenters. When it comes to feeding horses, the most important thing to remember is that fibre needs to be the main component of their diet. As herbivores, horse’s bodies are designed to spend at least 12 hours a day grazing on low protein, low calorie feed, such as pasture or hay.
They require ample opportunity to graze on pasture - ideally all day, every day access. Extended periods without access to grass can lead to gut ulcers and colic. Stabled horses should always be ensured large amounts of forage or pasture.
While grass and/or hay should make up the bulk of your horse's diet, not all pasture will be sufficient. Some pasture may even be too calorie-dense. Therefore, additional hard feed and forage is often required to maintain your horse's body weight and ensure a complete and balanced diet.
Only ever feed your horse a diet designed for horses. Dangerous food for horses include those that can cause toxicity, or lead to colic or gastric issues - these include lawn clippings, toxic plants, mouldy feed, large amounts of highly fermentable fruits such as apples, or sudden changes in diet. It is generally recommended to make any changes to your horse's diet gradually, over a couple of weeks.
