To measure your dog for a muzzle, you will need a tape measure and the following measurements:
Depending on the type of muzzle and the manufacturer, additional measurements may be required. Ensure you always measure your dog, and check the size guides provided by the manufacturer to ensure proper fit.
Soft muzzles should fit comfortably over the snout and fasten behind the ears. It should be snug enough that the dog cannot remove it or open their mouth to bite while still providing comfortable wear. Soft muzzles will not allow dogs to pant, which can reduce their ability to cool down their body temperature. Dogs will not be able to eat and drink wearing soft muzzles.
Basket muzzles or "wire muzzles" are a cage style that sits over your dog's snout and fastens behind the ears. Basket muzzles allow your dog to pant easily, however eating and drinking is difficult. Basket muzzles help prevent serious injury by presenting a physical barrier between your dog's mouth and the object in contrast to soft muzzles, which prevent serious injury by reducing your dog's ability to open their mouth.
Please note, muzzles should only be worn under strict supervision and for short periods of time. Care should still be exercised while wearing muzzles. Dogs can still bite through a muzzle, especially if not properly fitted.
