Clay cat litter is one of the most common types of cat litter and has been used for many years by cat owners around the world. It is made from a naturally occurring substance called bentonite clay.
Clumping clay cat litter is the most popular variety, which is made from a specific type of bentonite clay called sodium bentonite. Sodium bentonite has the property of swelling and forming clumps when it comes into contact with moisture, making it easy to scoop out and dispose of cat urine and faeces while leaving the remaining litter clean and dry.
Clay litter is not toxic. A common concern with using clay litter is feline asthma. Small dust particles can cause irritation to the airways, triggering an asthma attack. If your cat has asthma or is prone to allergies, a dust free and unscented litter is recommended, such as the Catsan Cat Litter Crystals or the Furrytail Michu Natural Clumping Tofu Cat Litter Original. Another concern with clay litter, is that if the bentonite clay is ingested it could cause a blockage in your cat's intestines.
Bentonite clay is mined from the soil in the environment, which means it is not sustainably sourced and there are concerns about the impact of clay mining on the natural environment. It can also be detrimental if released into the water. Bentonite clay is not biodegradable and used clay litter will eventually end up as landfill. Read our article for tips on Sustainable Pet Care.
