Corn cat litter is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional clay-based cat litters. It is made from natural, renewable corn kernels, which are processed and dried to form small, absorbent granules.
The primary advantages of corn cat litter are its superior odour control and high absorbency. The natural enzymes help to neutralise odours, while the porous nature absorbs liquid waste very well, helping to keep the litter box dry and clean.
Furthermore, corn cat litter is usually dust-free and less likely to cause respiratory issues for both cats and their owners. It is also lighter in weight compared to clay litter, which makes it easier to handle and dispose of.
It is important to store corn based litter properly, as unsealed bags can lead to the development of toxic mould within the litter.
Always consider your pet's preference and health condition when choosing a kitty litter. If you're thinking of switching to a different type of litter, it's best to do it gradually to allow your cat to adjust to the new texture and smell.
It is not common for cats to be allergic to corn, but not impossible. Most corn litters have low dusting. However, if your cat has respiratory issues or is prone to allergies, a dust free and unscented litter is recommended, such as the Catsan Cat Litter Crystals or the Furrytail Michu Natural Clumping Tofu Cat Litter Original.
Corn litter is non toxic and safe for cats. It is not unusual for young kittens still learning to use litter trays to attempt to eat the cat litter. For this reason, we recommend avoiding clumping clay or crystal litters which can cause illness when ingested or inhaled.
Biodegradable litters such as corn litter and litters made from plant material or recycled paper are much less likely to do harm if taste tested. Constant eating or ingestion of large amounts is not ideal, consider changing litters and you may need to seek veterinary attention if your pet becomes unwell.
