Cat dental treats are specially designed treats that help to maintain cat dental health. They usually have a crunchy texture that aids in scraping off plaque and tartar build-up on your cat's teeth, much like brushing does for humans. Some may also contain ingredients that promote better breath, healthier gums and overall oral hygiene. Many dental treats are designed to stimulate your cat's interest, containing flavors such as chicken, fish or liver to entice them.
It's important to note that these treats are meant to supplement, not replace, a proper dental care routine for your cat. This might include daily brushing of their teeth and regular check-ups with your vet.
Daily brushing is the most effective strategy for maintaining your pet's dental health. Dental treats should not be used as a substitute, but rather as an additional way to help. However, keep in mind that these management strategies will only be effective, safe and pain-free, if your pet has no pre-existing dental disease. Please consult with your veterinarian to determine the best management plan for your pet's dental health moving forward. This might include a dental clean performed under general anaesthesic before implementing strategies like treats, brushing or prescription dental diets.
We would recommend using treats approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). The council consists of a group of veterinary dental experts who recognise products that meet specific standards for controlling plaque and tartar.
To ensure your cat's diet is complete and balanced, treats should make up no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake. Can cats of all ages have dental treats? Dental treats are typically only advised for cats from 12 months of age. However, please refer to the back of your product packaging for specific recommendations made by the manufacturer.
