The Australian sun is known for its harmful and damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. Many people recognise that extra protection is needed to keep their skin safe such as a hat, sunscreen, eyewear and protective clothing. Our dogs are covered in hair, which does offer some protection. However, areas like the belly, nose, eyelids and ears have less hair, or no hair at all. If you have a light coloured or white dog with pink skin, they are even more susceptible to harmful UV rays.
So how can pet owners protect their dogs nose the same way we would protect our own skin? Trying to limit your pet's exposure to harmful UV radiation is always best to prevent skin damage from occurring. If you cannot limit your dog's sun exposure during the day, pet-safe sunscreens are a good place to start, however they do have limitations. Any sunscreen you place on your dog's nose may be licked off, reducing its overall efficacy. Nose shields are similar to a hat for your dog's nose, which provides a physical barrier between the sun and your dog's skin. Specialised products like "NuNose" are also available if you speak to your veterinary dermatologist, which offers longer-lasting UV protection for your dog's nose.
If you notice any changes to your dog's skin, it is important you speak to your veterinarian.
