Clumping cat litter is a type of cat litter that is designed to absorb liquid waste, such as urine, and form it into tight clumps. This clumping action is made possible by the use of absorbent materials, most commonly bentonite clay, but it can also be made from other materials such as corn or wheat.
The benefit of clumping cat litter is that it allows for easy removal of waste without having to empty the entire litter box. When the cat uses the litter box, the liquid waste is absorbed by the litter and forms a clump that can be scooped out. This leaves the remaining litter clean and fresh, prolonging the time between full litter changes.
Clumping litter also helps to control litter odour, as it seals away the waste and prevents it from spreading throughout the litter box. However, it's important to note that not all cats or their owners prefer clumping litter, as some cats may not like the texture, and some owners may be concerned about the dust produced by certain types of clumping litters. Always consider your cat's preferences and health when choosing a type of cat litter.
Clumping litter often will last longer and usually only need a full litter change every week or two. The cost of a bag of clumping litter may be higher, but the benefits make it worth the upfront expense. A 1kg bag of clumping litter could last up to 14 times longer compared to a non-clumping litter, since it needs to be replaced much less frequently.
It is not unusual for young, newly weaned kittens still learning to use litter trays to attempt to eat the cat litter. For this reason, we recommend avoiding clumping clay or crystal litters which can cause illness when ingested or inhaled. Biodegradable litters such as those based on plant material or recycled paper are much less likely to do harm if taste tested.
