Laser toys are a great way to exercise your cat whilst keeping them mentally stimulated. Indoor cats will particularly love laser toys as they mimic the movements of their natural prey. Laser toys provide your cat with interactive play whilst avoiding them biting or scratching your hands. Other ways to keep your hands safe are by using automatic toys and teaser toys.
When used properly, laser toys help to keep your cat active and stimulated. However, there are some safety concerns with improper use. Firstly, never shine a laser light directly into your pet's eyes as this can cause permanent eye damage. Also make sure to store the laser toy in a secure spot out of your cat's reach when you are not playing with it. It is also important to mix up your cat's play with some other interactive toys that your cat is able to catch so your cat can get the satisfaction of catching their prey, otherwise they may become frustrated. Playing with the laser in short bursts and then allowing your cat to catch a soft toy is a great way for your cat to complete their hunt.
Start by aiming the laser pointer slightly away from your cat, then moving it around in small movements until you have your cat's interest. Then you can start to move it further away from your cat as your cat follows it around. Let your cat 'catch' the light every so often then slowly move it away from them to continue to play. Make sure to play in an open area where your cat has plenty of room to move around without accidentally hurting themselves during play when they're not paying attention.
