Grain free diets focus on replicating a dog's natural, ancestral diet. which is free from common ingredients like wheat, corn, rice, and oats. The main ingredients focus on using natural, high quality protein sources and even superfoods that may offer nutritional benefits.
Many pet parents find that their dogs do better on grain-free diets and this can manifest as improved digestion, or relief from itchy skin or common dog allergies. In terms of allergies, grain allergies are actually quite rare; protein source is the most common culprit when a food allergy is suspected.
If your dog has a confirmed grain allergy or if you would need a novel or single protein diet, which many natural brands do offer, grain-free diets are a great option. It is however important to critically evaluate the ingredients and nutrients that it provides as carbohydrate alternatives can offer less in the way of nutrients. For example, brown rice is an excellent source of fibre and slow release energy. while tapioca flour has little fibre.
Recently, there have been concerns regarding grain-free diets being linked to heart disease. There is no conclusive evidence yet on this but for dogs who have been diagnosed with DCM or are at higher risk, it would be best to discuss with your vet which diet would be most suitable for your dog.
Grains are often referred to as filler ingredients but grains are actually a valuable source of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Compared to wolves, domestic dogs evolved through the years, enabling them to process and digest these ingredients.

Grain-free dog food may be more expensive, as less cost-effective carbohydrate sources like sweet potato or tapioca flour are used in place of grains. However, costs can still vary depending on the brand and quality of the ingredients.
With any change in diet, it would be best to do so over a period of at least 7-10 days to reduce the risk of tummy upsets.
