Urinary dog foods are designed with a very carefully controlled balance of minerals and nutrients to promote a healthy bladder in your dog. They contain ingredients to control urine pH, minerals and protein to decrease, and in some cases, even dissolve urinary crystal formation. These diets are designed for dogs with diagnosed urinary issues, so it is important to check in with your vet prior to choosing a prescription food.
Urinary wet foods have an added benefit of providing your dog with extra hydration. This is helpful for supporting kidney function and increasing bladder voiding, which further reduces the risk of urinary tract conditions. For dogs without urinary issues, adding wet dog food into their diet helps to reduce their risk of kidney and urinary issues in the future.
The different urinary diets are formulated for specific conditions, so it is crucial to follow your vet's recommendation. For example, Hills u/d is designed for dogs with a history of urate or cystine stones, whereas Hills c/d is formulated for dogs with struvite or oxalate stones. There are also formulations designed to manage your dog's urinary issues as well as help them lose excess body weight.
Pet Circle stocks prescription urinary foods from Hills and Royal Canin, however these two brands work differently to manage urinary issues so it is important that they are not mixed together or fed concurrently.
Certain factors can make crystal and urolith formation more likely in dogs. These include; urinary tract infection, reduced water intake, reduced voiding (either due to reduced water intake or decreased opportunity to void), diet (a high dietary intake of the minerals and proteins which make up uroliths can predispose to urolith formation) and breed predisposition. In most cases, several of these factors are present.
Generally, prescription urinary diets are life-long, however your vet will be able to provide specific advice based on your dog's condition.
Prescription urinary diets are formulated specifically for dogs with urinary issues, so we do not recommend their use in healthy dogs without a history of these conditions.
