With 80% of dogs over the age of 3 affected by dental disease, pet-parents are looking for more ways to prevent plaque build-up and relieve that bad doggy breath smell! Dental disease can also lead to gum inflammation, rotting of the teeth, tooth loss, pain, and more serious conditions like heart disease or diabetes in dogs.
Dental dog food diets help to mechanically clean the teeth while your pet eats to prevent plaque build up. This makes it an easy to use option for dental health while also providing your dog with a nutritionally balanced and complete, premium quality dry food.
Dental dog food use a unique kibble shape and texture to brush your dog's teeth as they chew! These diets use a compressed fibre matrix that is soft enough for the teeth to press into, but provides an uneven surface that is abrasive to the tooth, scraping plaque from its surface.
Some may also use sodium polyphosphates to bind calcium in saliva, which is a key component of tartar. By cleaning the surface of teeth and preventing tartar formation, these diets reduce the plaque and tartar on your dog's teeth. Ultimately, it is the bacteria contained in plaque that leads to foul smelling breath, gum inflammation and can access the blood stream to affect the heart, liver and kidneys for your dog.
There are two types of dental diets available: Prescription Dental Diets and Premium Dental Diets. Prescription dog food should be used as per the recommendations of your regular vet and are commonly advised after a dental procedure or in prone breeds. Premium dental diets can be used to prevent dental disease in all dogs.
When choosing dental care products, I recommend looking for Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) approval. VOHC approved products have been tested and proven to prevent reduce plaque and/or tartar. The prescription dental diets and the non-prescription Hills Science Diet Oral Care are VOHC approved.
There are many ways to prevent dental disease in dogs. Tooth brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease, but providing a dental diet is a great alternative for dogs that are resistant to brushing. You can also try dog dental chews and water additives.
