Anti-gulp food bowls or slow feeding dog bowls are recommended for deep chested dogs who are prone to bloat, or gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV). These specially designed bowls helps to avoid rapid ingestion of food. Other suggested methods for bloat prevention include feeding smaller portions more frequently, leaving enough time between meals and exercise, stress reduction and slower water intake.

Dogs may gulp their food for a number of reasons. Some individual dogs and breeds like Labradors are very highly food motivated which can lead them to gulp their food. Other causes include extreme hunger, underlying digestive disorders or food allergies. Anxious dogs who are concerned about their food being taken away, or who eat surrounded by other pets may also gulp their food to avoid it being stolen!
Anti-gulp bowls work by creating a mini-maze through which your dog has to navigate around to retrieve their food. This forces them to eat more slowly as they are unable to take in full mouthfuls. Slowing the ingestion of food also means that dogs swallow less air as they eat, which helps to reduce the risk of bloat.
