Dog crates are versatile tools that offer numerous benefits for both dogs and their owners, from providing a safe and secure space for your furry friend to rest to offering aid in training, vet visits and travel. Pet Circle stock a range of crates in a variety of sizes, styles, and materials, catering to the needs of dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
Crate training offers a multitude of benefits. One of the main positives for pet owners is helping with overnight toilet training in puppies, as dogs instinctively avoid soiling their sleeping areas. It also provides a secure environment during travel and serves as a controlled space during recovery from surgery, sickness or injury. A crate, being akin to a den, offers dogs a retreat when stressed or anxious, aiding in anxiety reduction.
Furthermore, it can be used in obedience training to help establish boundaries as well as a preventative measure against potential home damage from an unsupervised pet. For dog owners, knowing their pets are safe in their crates provides peace of mind. However, it's crucial to remember that crates should never be used as punishment, nor should dogs be left in them for extended periods.
Choosing the correct size crate for your dog is a fundamental aspect of crate training and usage. A properly sized crate ensures that your dog feels safe, secure, and comfortable. The right crate size will depend on your dog's breed, size, and age. When selecting a crate, it should be large enough to allow your dog to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lie down. They should be able to stretch out without feeling confined, but not so large that they could designate one corner as their bathroom area. To determine the right crate size:
Length: Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not the tip of the tail, as this will make the crate too large). Add 2-4 inches to this measurement for the correct crate length.
Height: Measure your dog from the top of the head to the ground. If your dog has naturally erect ears, measure from the tip of the ears. Add 2-4 inches to this measurement for the correct crate height.
The first step is to place the crate in a central area of your home (e.g. living room). Make sure there is some comfy bedding inside. Next put some treats or a high value toy in the crate to make it attractive for your puppy/dog. At the start, leave the door to the crate open and encourage your pup to enter the crate.
Make sure to provide positive reinforcement with a treat and praise when your puppy enters the crate. Once your pup seems comfortable going in, try to close the door and provide further treats and praise. Never force your puppy into the crate. Another strategy that can help is providing all meals in or near the crate. For more information read how to crate train your puppy.
