Autumn & Winter Health

Keeping your pet comfortable in the cooler months

A word from our vets...

Are you starting to feel the winter blues? A deeper chill in the air in the evening, and a reluctance to get out of bed in the mornings? Chances are your pets have begun to feel the same - especially if you happen to have older animals in your home.

Just as we humans have plenty of options to stay warm in winter, there are plenty of ways to keep your pets comfortable in winter as well. So, follow Pet Circle's guide to health and winter pet care, and get ready to enjoy the cooler months as much as you do the warmer months.

Dress for the season

Pull out the winter woollies! Perhaps one of the easiest ways to keep your pet warm when the temperatures drop is by wrapping them up in a cosy jumper, coat or raincoat to help with body temperature regulation. These are great for short-coated dog breeds as well as puppies and elderly dogs, who are most likely to feel the cold.

A cosy new bed

Who doesn't love curling up in a cushy bed when it's cold out? Blankets and plush beds are a wonderful idea for all - dogs, cats and even small animals - but you could also consider an elevated or bolster bed or even a cosy igloo. Of course, the best place for a pet to be during winter is inside with you.

Keep fit, keep warm

While many of us are driven to exercise throughout winter to achieve a "summer body", it's important to exercise your pet too. Rather than hiding under blankets all day, warm up with a walk or run in the park - and get some much-appreciated Vitamin D in the process, too! If less daylight hours are putting you off, why not check out some glow-in-the-dark play toys, or an LED light-up collar, lead, or dog tag?

A healthy coat for a healthy pet

A long coat on a dog is no problem in winter, provided that it is well-maintained and groomed. A well-groomed coat will keep your dog properly insulated, which is very important if they spend a lot of time outdoors. Dog jumpers can also tangle your dog's coat, so be sure to brush it out in between wears. When it comes to shampoos, go for ultra-moisturising varieties to prevent your pet's skin from drying out in the cold air.
