Wood or pine cat litter is another natural, eco-friendly alternative to traditional clay cat litter. It's made from sawdust and wood shavings, typically from pine, cedar, or other softwood trees.
There are two main types of wood cat litter: pellets and shavings. Pellet litter is made by compressing sawdust into small, dense pellets, which are very absorbent and help to control odour. Shavings or granules are softer and lighter, but may not be as absorbent.
The advantages of wood cat litter include its natural, biodegradable nature. It is often made from lumber industry waste or from sustainable sources, making it a good choice for environmentally conscious pet owners. Wood litter also has a natural, fresh scent which can help to control odours. Pine, in particular, has a strong fragrance that many people find pleasant.
Wood based litter tends to cause less litter tracking, resulting in a tidier home. Wood cat litter is also typically dust-free, which can be a benefit for cats and owners who have respiratory sensitivities. It's generally lightweight and easy to handle, and many types are compostable or flushable (though always check local regulations before flushing any type of cat litter).
Unfortunately, wood based litter is non-clumping, there will be some cats who have a preference for other types of litter, and the pine smell can occasionally be too strong for some people.
