Cat litter crystals made from silica gel is not toxic to pets and will not cause harm when small amounts are ingested. However, take care that your pet does not ingest a large amount of litter of any kind. If you are concerned about your dog ingesting crystals, consider a hooded litter tray or placing the litter tray in a room where your dog cannot access it. You could install a microchip pet door to ensure only your cat can enter that room. If you have a cat which continuously ingests litter, consider switching the type of litter and we recommend a medical health check with your veterinarian if there are any concerns.
Most cat litter crystals are not biodegradable. However, the Trouble and Trix Crystal Litter are made naturally and can be considered biodegradable. Eco-friendly litter options include wood litter, tofu litter, and corn or other plant litter. Many of these can be composted in your garden or flushed down the toilet.
