Spot-on parasite preventatives for cats are specially formulated products designed to control, prevent, and eliminate flea infestations on cats, as well as to control ticks, heartworm and intestinal worms depending on the product chosen.
Regular flea, heartworm and intestinal worming protection is very important for all cats, as the consequences of infestation with these parasites range from mild irritation to life-threatening disease. Tick control is recommended for cats who spend time outdoors, along with tapeworm protection, particularly for cats who like to hunt and ingest small rodents, reptiles like lizards and amphibians like frogs.
If you are unsure what level of protection your cat needs, speak to one of our vets on our 24/7 free online vet service, or speak with your local veterinarian.
The process of using a topical parasite preventative involves preparation, application, and post-application monitoring. First, the cat is placed into a comfortable position (sometimes wrapping your cat comfortable but firmly in a towel or blanket wile leaving their head and neck exposed can help). We recommend doing this first, as many cats will run and hide if they can when they hear the sound of the parasite preventative being taken from the cupboard! The fur on the back of the neck should be parted to apply the topical liquid directly to the skin. Ensure the whole tube is emptied. In larger cats the dose can be applied in several different areas. It is important that you apply the spot-on product high up on the back of the neck where your cat cannot access to groom it away. It's important to monitor your cat after application for any adverse reactions.
