Flea protection plays a crucial role in your cat's health and comfort. In Australia, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common flea pestering our domestic pets. Fleas can cause significant discomfort for your cat, leading to behaviours such as constant scratching, biting, and overgrooming as well as become a nuisance for your family and other pets, given that they can easily hop from host to host.
At Pet Circle, we stock a wide range of dedicated flea treatments for cats of all breeds and ages to keep your cat happy and healthy.
There are a number of excellent flea preventatives that are effective, easy-to-use and inexpensive:
Yes, indoor cats should be treated for fleas as they can still be exposed, despite living indoors. Fleas can enter homes on other pets or people, and they can transmit diseases like tapeworms and Bartonella. Therefore, flea prevention is essential even for indoor cats.
If your cat has fleas, remember adult fleas make up only 5% of the flea population, with the rest being eggs and larvae. Treat your cat regularly with an effective flea preventative to kill hatching fleas before they can lay more eggs. Washing all bedding, toys, and blankets in hot water weekly for 8 weeks and vacuuming carpets, rugs, furniture and pet areas every other day for 1-2 months is important. Lastly, consider a pet-safe environmental flea treatment for unhatched fleas. Always follow label instructions.
If your cat is scratching excessively even after you have started flea prevention, they may have a flea allergy. It is important to see your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
