Cats have a notoriously poor thirst drive, and tend to prefer drinking water from running sources rather than out of a bowl. Water fountains provide a constant stream of running water, with the added benefit of filtering the water to keep it clean and free of dust, dirt and other nasties.
Boosting hydration for cats is particularly important as kidney and urinary issues are common, especially in our ageing feline-friends. By encouraging water intake, we can increase the volume of fluid flowing through the kidneys and urinary tract, supporting kidney function and reducing the risk of lower urinary tract disease.
Water fountains come in a variety of materials, sizes and with a lot of different features. Things to consider when purchasing a water fountain include:
For multiple pet households, a larger fountain which holds greater water volume and allows multiple pets to drink simultaneously may be best. For cats that travel, or for houses with limited space, a smaller water fountain may be preferable. Water fountains with shallower, wider drinking surfaces can tend to suit some cats better, to avoid their whiskers touching the edges of the bowl. Known as 'whisker stress', this can be highly irritating for cats and is best avoided where possible.
Stainless steel fountains are durable, hygienic and easy to clean, though can be more expensive than other types. Ceramic is very hygienic and more stable, but may break more easily in high activity households or with overenthusiatic pets. And although plastic is more cost-effective but can be harder to clean and less hygienic when damaged by general wear and tear.
Water fountains with replaceable filters are recommended to keep the water fountain in optimal condition and maximise the efficiency of filtration.
Added features such as night lights, dishwasher-safe materials, smart-functions like phone alerts or automatic shut off when the water level is low can help to make yours, and your cats life easier and more comfortable.
Pet Circle stocks a wide range of top brands, including:
The fountain should be cleaned and water replaced at least weekly, or more frequently for multiple cat households, or if there are persistent bubbles in the water (a sign of dissolved organic matter).
Filter types are specific to the type of fountain used, so it is important to check our range ofreplacement filters for the correct one.
